Job Description

The successful candidate will be an outstanding, hands-on engineer with an in-depth material science knowledge with focus on optical and thermal properties reporting to the Applications Engineering Manager, as part of a team tasked with development of new applications for CVD diamond in Santa Clara, CA.

The role involves supporting the sales and marketing team to provide innovative solutions to customers in applications requiring extreme optical performance and thermal management as well as generating costing, BOM and routing worksheets for such products. In this role you will often interface directly with customers’ engineering and production teams to provide diamond based solution addressing novel and extreme applications in EUV photolithography, laser processing, optical spectroscopy and high power density thermal management.

The role often involves management of technical projects from conception to completion. Internally the successful candidate will work with Element Six’s operations teams to qualify original ideas and prototypes through an NPI qualification process into manufacture-able products.

Post pandemic, the candidate will need to commit to traveling to the UK (Ascot and Harwell) facilities for special orientation.

While a documented theoretical and technical skill set is important, equal emphasis will be put on personal abilities in terms of proactive team player, communication and ability to think outside the box.

What you’ll do:

  • Develop an in depth technical understanding of CVD diamond fabrication and its use for optical and thermal applications
  • Apply your knowledge CVD diamond synthesis and material processing including lapping and polishing, with material characterization to propose and develop diamond based solution for customer applications
  • In this position you will be required to use CAD to develop engineering drawings, BOM and routing spreadsheets to support the sales staff and establish guidelines for operations and prototyping teams
  • Prepare detailed plans for assigned commissioning activities, integrate all discipline activities into these plans
  • ·Develop training programs to ensure seamless transition from an NPI process to production activities
  • Become the in-house expert on the optical and laser based applications of CVD diamond and diamond enabled products
  • A passion for engineering, technology and a strong drive to develop products that are  commercially viable will make you a perfect candidate for this position


Education and Experience

  • Material, Mechanical, Chemical Engineering or Physics: minimum Bachelor Degree or a related discipline and a strong background in Optics
  • Minimum 3 years of experience in a similar engineering role is preferred
  • Experience with new projects, start-ups or process transfer experience a plus
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to write clear and concise reports and publish technical articles
  • Successful track record of delivering on commitments
  • Experience in managing both internal and external resources: design, analysis, fabrication etc
